Details have emerged about the mystery “medical complication” that left Django star Jamie Foxx in hospital for weeks, and months in recovery.

In an undated video circulating on social media, the Oscar-winning star appears to discuss the mystery health issue with fans outside a restaurant in Phoenix, Arizona.

The 56-year-old tells them that he had a “bad headache” on April 11, 2023, and “asked my boy for an Advil”, before snapping his fingers. Then “I was gone for 20 days”.

“I don’t remember anything. I’m in Atlanta … My sister and my daughter took me to the first doctor. They gave me a cortisone shot. The next doctor said, ‘There’s something going on up there’,” he says.

Foxx then points to his head before explaining that he wouldn’t say any more “on camera”.

It is one of a handful of times Foxx has commented publicly on the “medical complication” that hit him while he was shooting Netflix comedy Back in Action in Atlanta just over a year ago. The movie also starred Cameron Diaz and also starred Andrew Scott and Jamie Demetriou.

There were multiple reports at time that Foxx had been rushed to hospital in a condition serious enough that his family flew to Atlanta to be by his bed.

Foxx’s daughter Corinne confirmed the incident in an Instagram post, in which she also pleaded for privacy for her father.

“We wanted to share that my father, Jamie Foxx, experienced a medical complication yesterday,” she wrote.

“Luckily, due to quick action and great care, he is already on his way to recovery.”

About a fortnight later, People reported that Foxx was still in hospital.

“He’s OK, thank God,” a source told the magazine.

“He’s still in the hospital and doctors are running tests but he’s awake and alert. They’re keeping him under observation.”

Foxx, who is also known for films such as Collateral and Ray, didn’t comment publicly until a social media post in May.

“Appreciate all the love!!! Feeling blessed,” he wrote without revealing further details.

Last July, he offered a further hint: “I went through something that I thought I would never, ever go through,” he said in a further Instagram post.

“I know a lot of people were waiting, or wanting to hear updates, and to be honest with you – I just didn’t want you to see me like that.”

The star became emotional as he confessed that previous months had been “tough”.

In December, Foxx told a Critics Choice Association event that he “couldn’t actually walk” six months earlier. Then, in March he teased that he would explain his health scare “in a funny way”.

“Everybody wants to know what happened, and I’m going to tell you what happened, but I gotta do it in my way,” Foxx said in a speech while accepting a producers’ award at an African American Film Critics Association event.

“I’m gonna do it in a funny way.”
