The only living foal of champion race mare Winx has smashed all records as she sold at auction.

The 18-month-old filly sold for $10 million at the annual Inglis Easter Yearling Sale at Sydney’s Warwick Farm on Monday afternoon.

The filly, sired by Coolmore Stud’s champion stallion Pierro, had drawn interest from in Australia and overseas. But she was sold to Winx’s part-owner Debbie Kepitis and her Woppitt Bloodstock.

Kepitis broke down and wept when the hammer finally fell.

“I just couldn’t let her go,” a still-emotional Kepitis said after the sale.

“She’s Australian forever and she’s going to be just fabulous … Hopefully she’ll do a Winx. But, look, it doesn’t matter if she doesn’t … I’ve got Winnie.”

The sale of the filly smashes all previous thoroughbred yearling records in Australia – and, reportedly, globally. The price is double the $5 million paid for Black Caviar’s half-brother in 2013, and dwarfs the previous filly yearling record of $2.6 million.

Winx was retired in April 2019 after winning a record 25 Group I races – including being the only horse to win Australia’s greatest weight-for-age race, the Cox Plate, four times. She had 33 straight wins and finished racing having earned more than $26 million in prize money.

She is also the only horse to be named Australian racehorse of the year four times. Her run at the title topped two other star mares – Black Caviar and Sunline – who each won three years it in a row.

She sadly lost her first foal, sired by another wonder sire in I Am Invincible, just days before it was due to be born.

Winx is in foal to top stallion Snitzel, with her second offspring due later this year.
