Linda Noskova has praised her opponent after prevailing in the first ever all-Czech Wimbledon final.

Noskova repelled a remarkable comeback from her more experienced friend Karolina Muchova to battle to an exhilarating three-set triumph on Centre Court.

After the match, Noskova said, “It feels incredible. Today, and all these matches have been so tough. Physically and mentally tough.

“Karolina, you really made me work for it. I’m so glad I could play my first Grand Slam title with you, I think we made history today.”

The Princess of Wales presented Noskova with her trophy after the match attended by former Wimbledon champions Martina Navratilova and Billie Jean King, and actors Jodie Foster and Stanley Tucci.

The 21-year-old Noskova became the youngest women’s champion since her hero, another Czech Petra Kvitova, with her seesaw 6-2 5-7 6-3 triumph on Saturday, remarkably becoming the third winner from her country in four years following Barbora Krejcikova and Marketa Vondrousova.

Muchova, the experienced 29-year-old who also lost in the 2023 French Open final, initially looked uncomfortable in the face of the clean, low aggressive hitting of her Olympic doubles partner, but looking poised to succumb 6-2 6-2 in the second as well, she launched a comeback for the ages.

Fighting back in the face of three match points at 5-2 down, another at 5-3 and another at 5-4, Muchova somehow levelled the match and with the youngster suddenly looking nervous and a little at sea, the way Noskova regrouped in the deciding set felt quite astonishing.

Taking control once more, and serving for the match again at 5-3, she earned a sixth championship point and this time made no mistake, with a blistering unreturned serve.

It was hard for Muchova to take as they were presented with their prizes by Princess Kate, but the older Czech showed real class as she told Noskova with a smile: “It’s really tough to say any words but I’ll start with Linda – my ex-friend!”
