A manhunt is underway for several males who fled the scene of a fatal collision involving a stolen SUV in Melbourne on Tuesday night.

Two cars collided at the intersection of Warrigal Road and Highbury Road in Burwood, in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs, about 7pm.

The driver of one of the vehicles died at the scene.

Victoria Police said some males from the second vehicle, which was believed to be stolen, fled on foot.

Two 15-year-old girls were arrested at the scene. They were taken to hospital under police guard.

A major search was launched on Tuesday night for the males who took off, with involvement from highway patrol, the dog squad and public order response team.

The second vehicle, a car driven by an innocent person, ending up in the front yard of a property and was destroyed in the crash.

The stolen car carrying the missing males and teen girls came to a stop further down the street, after crashing into a tree.

Police said the exact circumstances of the fatal incident were yet to be determined.

Anyone who witnessed the crash, has CCTV, dashcam footage or any other information that could assist police is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online at crimestoppersvic.com.au.
