A man has been charged over the brutal alleged murder of a Sydney woman while their housemates were at home, as horror details emerge.

The woman, aged in her 50s, was found inside the home in Clements Street, Russell Lea, in Sydney’s inner-west on Thursday morning, and had been living there for just a few weeks.

Media report that her throat was allegedly cut and she had shocking injuries to her upper body after being stabbed repeatedly in the chest.

Channel Seven’s Sunrise reports that a samurai sword was allegedly used as “one of” the weapons.

The gruesome scene has been described as one of the most confronting that many of the police responders had encountered.

The 42-year-old male housemate who was arrested shortly after was one of five residents at the home, investigators said. He has been charged with murder and will appear in Parramatta Court on Friday.

All occupants of the sharehouse were present when the alleged attack took place.

The man was arrested at the scene and held under guard as police investigated the domestic-violence death.

Police said they received a triple-zero call from a concerned neighbour just after 11am. They arrived at the address within minutes.

Inside, they found the woman with significant stab wounds to her upper body.

“We know that the victim and the other housemates moved into this residence five to six weeks ago,” Superintendent Christine McDonald said on Thursday.

The man and the woman, who is yet to be formally identified, were not thought to be in an intimate relationship, she said.

“Looking at the scene police arrived to, it is very clear that it is a homicide,” she said.

“The victim suffered significant and multiple injuries to her upper body.

“You can imagine, you’re known to the victim and a housemate of hers, you would be extremely distressed.”

The man had no criminal history of violence, with minor traffic and drug offences on his record.

He moved into the residence about three weeks after the woman, McDonald said.

“The fact that they are living together, residing albeit for two to three weeks, makes it a domestic-violence incident,” she said.

The other three residents of the share house are providing statements to investigators.

Police have asked anyone with information to come forward.
