Aldi Australia has made an unexpected move into fashion, announcing a branded streetwear line for people to wear when shopping the aisles of the discount supermarket chain.

News of the ALDImania range dropped on Tuesday – just a day earlier and many might have been forgiven for thinking it was a joke.

“Is this late April Fools? It would go well with my new Sydney trains jumper,” wrote one fan on the retailer’s Facebook page on Tuesday.

“Not so sure it’s an April fool, as they were splashed all over breakfast TV this morning,” wrote another.

But it’s true; Aldi really is releasing its own world-first branded streetwear and loungewear collection for its Australian shoppers.

The range hits stores on April 13, in what the retailer says will be “effortlessly chic” but casual and within budget.

“We have been offering our shoppers high-quality, affordable loungewear for years – but this is the first time we’ve brought our own brand of leisurewear to the middle aisles,” Aldi Australia’s buying director for ALDImania, Belinda Grice said.

“Designed to celebrate and champion our shoppers, this new range is made specifically with Aldi budgets in mind, without compromising on quality or comfort.”

Grice said the collection was made from sustainably sourced or recycled materials and the pieces were designed to be mix-and-match.

Every streetwear item Aldi is selling

Perhaps the biggest selling point of the collection is that every item is less than $20.

The priciest item Aldi fashionistas will be able to buy is a pair of sneakers that costs $19.99. The cheapest are socks that will set shoppers back just $4.99.

And it’s not all branded streetwear. Aldi is also offering double-walled insulated mugs and umbrellas in various designs. Here’s the full rundown of what will be on offer:

  • Sweatshirt (grey), hoodie (navy), trackpants (grey or navy), $14.99
  • T-shirt (grey or white), $8.99
  • Slides (grey stripe or navy), $7.99
  • Sneakers, $19.99
  • Socks (four styles), $4.99
  • Bucket hat, $7.99
  • Cap hat, $7.99
  • Beanie (2 styles), $7.99
  • Compact umbrella (three designs), $6.99
  • Double-walled insulated mug (three designs), $9.99

The range will be stocked in Aldi’s famous middle aisle, but all are only available for a “very limited time”.

For those who can’t make it into store, the retailer will give away five complete sets to shoppers via the Aldi Australia Facebook Group. That competition starts on April 3.

There was plenty of love for the new collection on the Aldi page on Tuesday – with eager shoppers lining up their top picks.

“The tracksuit for Mother’s Day – she’d love it!” wrote one keen Facebooker.

“This gonna be my whole wardrobe,” said another fan.
