A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for parts of Victoria, with residents being told to prepare for flash flooding, large hailstones and damaging winds.

An early morning warning was issued for the northwestern tip of the state, affecting Mildura, Ouyen, Swan Hill, Walpeup, Robinvale and Kerang for several hours from 7am, the Bureau of Meteorology said.

The low pressure trough, which is causing the storms, will move east across Victoria through the day.

A severe weather warning is also in place for the Northern Country, North Central, North East, Central and, South and West Gippsland and East Gippsland forecast districts.
