Tennis ball hail belts Brisbane

A severe storm has swept over Brisbane, leaving tennis ball-sized hail in parts of the city.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) last night issued a warning for south-east Queensland, with damaging winds, heavy rainfall and large hailstones forecast for much of the area.

Huge hailstones hit a number of Brisbane locations.

The thunderstorms passed through the area just after 6pm, but BoM said it would monitor the situation and advised residents to keep abreast of updates.

Residents shared photos and videos on social media of dark storm clouds rolling through as well as backyards filled with hailstones.

It follows Sydneysiders having watched a large shelf cloud descend across the city on Friday.

The SES advised people to secure loose items around their property and to move cars away from trees.

The public had been warned to keep clear of fallen power lines, storm drains and flood water during the storm.

Incredible pictures and videos started filtering through on social media – the best of which are below.
