Snow! … A chilly late winter delight across south-eastern Australia

For many in south-eastern Australia, the first days of August 2020 were a brisk reminder that we are still in the depths of winter.

An icy blast from the Antarctic brought snow to many areas that had not seen it in years, including Launceston and large parts of Tasmania, and Victoria’s Great Ocean Road.

There were flurries of snow in rural areas of northern Tasmania and more in central Victoria. For ski resorts in NSW and Victoria, it was a welcome bonus, after a season with little snow.

After rugging up early in the week, residents in three states were warned of a drenching to come later in the week. Western Australia’s south coast was forecast to get two months’ of rain in the 48 hours from Tuesday – with the same system moving east by week’s end.
