Hot August night: but don’t break out the thongs just yet

Melbourne has slept through its warmest August night on record, but a change is on its way, with parts of Victoria bracing for a blustery day as a cold change sweeps across the state.
The overnight temperature hovered at 17C in the city, dropping down to 16.3C at 8.28am. Official weather records restart at 9am each day.
The record-breaking night followed an unseasonably warm 21C on Thursday.
Strong winds picked up on Thursday evening and saw the SES receive 48 calls for assistance across the state, but the worst is yet to come.
An intense low-pressure system and cold front will move across the state, bringing damaging winds with gusts of up to 100km/h over Gippsland and the central and north central districts.
Rod Dixon, from BoM, said it was 19C at midnight, but a cold front was moving across the state.
“It just beats the old record of 16.2C set back in 1885, so quite a long-standing one,” he said.
“The temperature [in Geelong] has dropped back to 11C with the rainfall and cooler westerly winds.
“We’ll just see that temperature fall away in Melbourne as the front moves through and the rain settles in for a few hours. I think the winds will ease throughout the day.”
