Wet week ahead for Victoria

More heavy downpours are forecast across Victoria today as some regions mop up after Friday’s deluge.

Bendigo and surrounding areas were hit hardest on Friday as a sudden downpour caused minor flooding in the city.

The regional city received about 38 millimetres of rain in 24 hours, while Melbourne airport recorded more than 10mm.

Victoria was experiencing a “multi-day weather event” that was set to continue over the weekend, the Bureau of Meteorology said.

“What’s happened is this is a big intrusion of tropical monsoonal air into southern Australia, but there’s also a low expected to form near Adelaide over the weekend and that’s then going to move across Victoria and Tasmania,” spokesman Dr Andrew Tupper said.

“[That] means it’s able to wrap up all that tropical air into itself and cause further rain over those states.”

Some regions had already exceeded average January rainfall totals, senior forecaster Terry Ryan said.

“A lot of January’s averages are only 30 to 40 millimetres in a lot of parts of Victoria, so some parts have exceeded that already,” he said.

“Particularly over the last few days, and add the few days already up and you can see that happening for some places.”

The State Emergency Service (SES) received more than 150 calls for help yesterday as the downpour hit central Victoria.

SES commander Leanne Simpson said the forecast rain for Saturday could pose danger.

“The weather situation as we’ve seen in the last week or so has been very interchangeable and that’s likely to continue for a little bit of time yet,” she said.

“So just be conscious of what’s going on locally.”
