Sounds of silence as airline seals off children’s section

From November, one airline will introduce an adults-only area, giving refuge to people who can’t bear the sound of children crying, while creating a safe space for parents.

Turkish-Dutch carrier Corendon Airlines will be launching an ‘only adults’ zone on flights between Amsterdam and Curacao, which is a 10-hour flight.

Corendon Airlines said the child-free zone is intended for people travelling without children and business travellers who want a quiet space to work while in the air.

The area will only permit passengers aged over 16.

The dedicated area will be at the front of the aircraft and will consist of nine seats with extra leg room, plus another 93 standard seats.

Both walls and curtains will be installed to create a “shielded environment that contributes to a calm and relaxed flight”.

A seat reservation in the zone will cost €45 ($75) extra per single journey, while an extra legroom seat in the area is €100 ($168) extra, one way.

On board our flights, we always strive to respond to the different needs of our customers,” Corendon founder Atilay Uslu said.

“We are also the first Dutch airline to introduce the only adult zone, because we [are] trying to appeal to travellers looking for some extra peace of mind during their flight.”

Perks for parents

A few years ago on Reddit, a mother explained she had travelled back from Mexico on a five-hour flight and there were two different families on the aircraft, with three children under the age of three.

Despite the parents’ best efforts, the children cried, often feeding off another child’s cries.

I watched the parents struggle, embarrassed, constantly apologising to the people around them. I could see the anger of the people around them,” the mother wrote.

“Guess what parents? GOOD FREAKING JOB! As a mother of a previous toddler I understand how hard it is to not only travel, but be stuck in one seat for an airplane ride with them.”

The adults-only area on the Corendon Airlines flights might make travel easier for everyone.

People can escape crying children, but also parents might feel a little less judged sitting at the back of the plane, not having to worry so much about reactions from other passengers.

Experts also see the appeal of having a dedicated area for adults travelling without children, especially when the fee to sit in the area is relatively low.

Brett Snyder, who runs a travel agency and writes the Cranky Flier blog, told the Associated Press he can see the appeal.

“For a heavy leisure airline like Corendon, which is probably full of families with little kids, I can see the appeal for someone travelling without kids to pay extra to be away from them to have more peace and quiet,” he said.

Flying is usually pretty difficult for children, parents and sometimes other passengers.

Other airlines with adults-only sections

Corendon Airlines isn’t the first airline to recognise that some people require peace and quiet while flying.

Low-cost Singaporean airline Scoot also has a dedicated quiet area.

People are able to “Scoot-in-silence” in the quiet cabin, where only travellers aged over 12 can book seats.

In addition to no toddlers and babies, people also get more leg room, adjustable headrests and fewer distractions.

As the quiet section is located at the front of the plane, travellers also get to disembark early.

There was also one airline that backflipped on its decision to have an area free of small children.

Malaysia Airlines announced in 2012 that it wouldn’t allow any child under the age of 12 in an upper-level economy section of its Airbus A380 jets, a section with 70 economy seats.

The airline later reversed that decision, saying if there were too many families with children and infants to fit in the lower deck, it would find room for them in the upper-level section.
