Stephen Moore named new Wallabies captain

Stephen Moore is the new Wallabies captain, with Michael Hooper and Adam Ashley-Cooper named vice-captains.

Moore, a 91-Test veteran and Australia’s most-capped hooker, was officially announced on Monday as skipper for this month’s three-Test series against France and he now appears set to lead Australia to next year’s World Cup in England.

He replaces Ben Mowen who failed to make the Wallabies squad after announcing he’ll head overseas later this year.

Wallabies coach Ewen McKenzie said he was confident the trio of Moore and new deputies Ashley-Cooper and Hooper had the right leadership attributes to take his team to the next level.

“It’s a new group of leaders with a variety of personalities and experiences, where in combination they are empowered to help set a new direction towards the Rugby World Cup in 2015,” he said on Monday.

McKenzie said Moore wouldn’t be fazed by the challenge of captaincy, given his lengthy involvement at the national level.

“He understands what works well and why, and I think the added responsibility will suit him and the direction we are taking the team,” he said.

The Wallabies kick off their three-Test series against France on Saturday at Suncorp Stadium.
