Serena Williams has survived another day of Wimbledon carnage to edge ever closer to a record-equalling 24th grand slam singles crown.

Williams celebrated her milestone 100th match at The All England Club with a 90th win, needing just a tick over an hour to see off Russian qualifier and fellow tennis mum Evgeniya Rodina, 6-2 6-2.

The American superstar advanced as no top-10 women made the quarter-finals in 50 years of professional tennis following the fourth-round elimination of seventh seed Karolina Pliskova.

Pliskova crashed to a 6-3 7-6 (7-1) to big-hitting Dutchwoman Kiki Bertens, leaving world No.11 Angelique Kerber as the highest-ranked player left in the wide open draw.

The destruction paves the way further for Williams to complete her comeback from childbirth with an eighth title that would draw the 36-year-old level with Margaret Court’s all-time record 24 career majors.

“The seas have parted for her,” nine-times champion Martina Navratilova said from the BBC’s courtside bunker.

Williams will play Camila Giorgi for a last-four berth after the Italian progressed to her maiden grand slam quarter-final with a 6-3 6-4 defeat of Ekaterina Makarova.

Roger Federer is surprising even himself with his latest record-setting run to the Wimbledon quarter-finals.

Like a vintage Rolls Royce, Federer cruised into the last eight for a mind-boggling 16th time with another imperious centre-court display at The All England Club.

Federer took his tally of consecutive sets won on London’s hallowed lawns to 32 with a 6-0 7-5 6-4 dispatch of dangerous French left-hander Adrian Mannarino.

He swept through the opening set in just 16 minutes, dropping just five points, before shifting down a gear to conserve petrol for what he expects to be a more arduous second week of the championships.

“I didn’t miss much so I was very happy with the match,” the eight-times champion said after booking a last-eight date with South African Kevin Anderson.

“I’m very pleased to be back in the second week.”

One more straight-sets win would have Federer eclipsing his previous longest streak at the All England Club, when he won 34 sets in a row between the third round in 2005 and the 2006 final.

“I feel like these streaks just happen,” he said. “You can’t plan for them anyway.”

Meanwhile, Rafael Nadal reached the quarter-finals for the first time in seven years with a 6-3 6-3 6-4 win over Jiri Vesely.

The world No.1 and reigning French Open champion also extended his grand slam streak to 11 matches to book an appointment on Wednesday with either Argentine fifth seed Juan Martin del Potro or veteran Frenchman Gilles Simon.

“I am just enjoying every single today I play here. It’s a very positive four matches for me. I didn’t play on grass for a whole year,” Nadal said.
