Germany’s Angelique Kerber has overcome mid-match wobbles to beat Czech Republic’s Karolina Pliskova in the US Open..

Kerber appeared in control of the game after taking the first set, stumbled in the second, but recovered to take the match 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 in two hours seven minutes.

Kerber was playing the woman who earned her the world number one ranking.

Pliskova caused a big upset when she beat American Serena Williams in the semi-final, denying Williams a shot at a 23rd singles grand slam title and ensuring that Kerber will officially become number one when the new rankings are released on Monday.

Kerber, 28, has had a year to remember but had to reverse a recent loss to book-end it with a second grand slam title.

Last month, Pliskova denied Kerber from claiming the top rankings spot by beating her in the Cincinnati final, and at the trophy ceremony the tall Czech said, “Maybe next time,” as a tepid consolation to the German.

“I remember the Cincinnati final. I was actually really tired because I came from Rio and I had a lot of tough matches there,” Kerber, who claimed silver at the Rio Olympics, said.

Kerber beat Petra Kvitova in the fourth round and last year’s Open runner-up Roberta Vinci in the quarters before eliminating former world number one Caroline Wozniacki in the semis.

The German had a celebratory swim in Melbourne’s Yarra River after her breakthrough slam but had nothing planned after taking the US Open crown.

“No, I think that was once and that was OK,” she said when asked about taking another victory plunge.
