Nick Kyrgios is through to the last 16 of the Marseille Open in France, but fellow Aussie Bernard Tomic has suffered a shock exit from a tournament in the United States.

Kyrgios beat Canada’s Vasek Pospisil 6-4 6-4 to set up a second round meeting with Teymuraz Gabashvili, who upset tournament No.5 seed Gilles Simon.

The world No.41 is the only Australian in the draw with Stan Wawrinka the tournament’s top seed.

Meantime, No.2 seed Tomic was knocked out of the Delray Beach Open in Florida.

The Queenslander made a disappointing exit in the first round after being beaten 7-6 6-1 by American Rajeev Ram in little over an hour on Tuesday.

The world No.20’s departure means the tournament has lost its top two seeds, with world No.14 Kevin Anderson retiring after losing his first set loss 7-6 (7-3) to American Austin Krajicek.

Earlier, Australian duo John Millman and Sam Groth suffered agonising first-round losses, also at Delray Beach.

The in-form Millman lost the first set 6-3 to American Steve Johnson before taking the second set 7-5 against the tournament No.6 seed and world No.31.

But Millman went down 7-6 in the final set, losing a thrilling tiebreaker 10-8.

The big-serving Groth lost in almost identical fashion to American Noah Rubin.

Groth lost the first set 6-4 before winning the second 6-4, only to lose 7-6 (8-6) in the final set.

Perth’s Matthew Ebden was also a first round casualty. He was soundly beaten in straight sets by France’s Jeremy Chardy 6-2 6-1.

But the news was much better on Tuesday (AEDT) when Australian qualifier John-Patrick Smith upset tournament third seed and defending champion Ivo Karlovic in three sets.

He will now meet the winner of Juan Martin Del Potro or Denis Kudla in the next round.
