Kokkinakis angry at being drawn into Kyrgios mess

Thanasi Kokkinakis has spoken of his anger at being drawn into the Nick Kyrgios sledging scandal.

Kyrgios directed a barb about Wawrinka’s girlfriend, Croatian player Donna Vekic, at the Montreal Masters, claiming Vekic had slept with Kokkinakis.

Speaking publicly for the first time since the furore broke, Kokkinakis said he was upset with his friend.

“He (Kyrgios) apologised to me,” Kokkinakis said.

“I let him know, I made it pretty clear that he can’t be doing that. If he’s got a problem, he’s got to say it in private. The way he went about it definitely wasn’t the right thing.”

Kokkinakis said the sledging incident had left him unable to sleep.

“It’s been interesting, it’s been a circus,” he said.

“I haven’t gotten much sleep on the nights of the two incidents, yeah I didn’t get much sleep last night either.”

Kokkinakis said he had cleared the air with both Wawrinka and Vekic.

The 19-year-old addressed his fiery encounter with Ryan Harrison in the qualifiers for the Cincinnati Masters.

“Look, it obviously got pretty fiery out there,” he said.

“Didn’t agree with what he said to me at 6-5, because I think I did nothing to provoke him, but he brought up some stuff that I don’t agree with, and it is what it is, but I’ll keep that on the court.”
