The Australian Open Daily Deuce: day eight

After an action-packed weekend, which saw young gun Nick Kyrgios fulfill our Australia Day hopes by defeating Andreas Seppi, crowds returned in force to Melbourne Park on Monday.

• The Australian Open Daily Deuce: day four
• The Australian Open Daily Deuce: day five
• The Australian Open Daily Deuce: day six
The Australian Open Daily Deuce: day seven

Here’s what went down on day eight:

The original hipster

If you’re a fan of pint-sized Slovak powerhouse Dominika Cibulkova, you’ve no doubt noticed her boyfriend, Michal Navara, cheering her on from the stands. He was there for her victory over Victoria Azarenka and travels to every tournament with her.

You might also have noticed that Navara has the kind of Ned Kelly beard hipsters can only dream of.

In fact, he looks like he’d be more at home in a Fitzroy café than a Grand Slam.

If he’s interested in some casual hospitality work during the Open, we can think of a few places who’d welcome him with open arms.

Legendary selfies

There have been some pretty epic selfies snapped in the past 12 months, from Barack Obama to Prince William.

However, for a tennis fan, this one probably takes the cake.

At the official opening of the new Margaret Court Arena complex, Margaret Court herself snapped a selfie with fellow legends Rod Laver, Evonne Goolagong Cawley and Ken Rosewall.

Here’s the finished product:

Meanwhile, across the Park, Rafa Nadal also got in on the selfie action with one lucky fan.

We don’t have the final copy of that particular one, but we presume it’s up on her Facebook page already.

Leaky roof

Not much could quell the power and intensity of the match between Stanislas Wawrinka and Guillermo Garcia-Lopez. Nothing, that is, except for a little roof leak.

Play had to be halted between the two powerhouses due to a leak in the roof of Margaret Court, which was promptly mopped up by diligent officials.

Clearly unfazed by a little water, Wawrinka went on to win the match.

Lookalikes left, right and centre

During her round four loss to Serena Williams, something else caught our eye about Garbine Muguruza, aside from her oncourt tenacity.

The Spanish player bears a striking resemblance to Aussie swimmer Stephanie Rice (post nose job).

That’s Steph on the left and Muguruza on the right (with a particularly adorable puppy might we add).

Speaking of doppelgangers, here at The New Daily offices we like to call our director of news, Patrick Elligett, Stanislas thanks to his similarities to the reigning Swiss champ.

We like to think he’s living a double life as journalist by day, tennis pro by night.
