Kieran Foran quitting is ‘news to me’: manager

Kieran Foran has reportedly walked out on his $5 million contract with the Parramatta Eels, but the NRL club and the player’s manager say they are unaware of any exit talk.

News Corp has reported that Foran has been forced to quit the club and taken an indefinite break from the NRL to deal with his personal problems.

Foran had been granted leave in April to enter rehabilitation following the breakdown of his relationship with his long-term partner Rebecca Pope – the mother of his two children.

Recently, Foran, who is injured, was stripped of the Eels captaincy in June for failing to fulfil his club duties.

But the Eels say they have not not been asked by Foran for a release.

“The Parramatta Eels have not received a request from Kieran Foran’s management regarding a release from his contract,” the club said in a statement.

“Kieran’s welfare is the club’s primary concern and the Eels will continue to offer all the resources available to aid in his recovery.”

When contacted by the ABC, Foran’s manager said the reports came as a surprise to him.

“I am reading about it now. News to me,” Paul Sutton said via text message.

Foran had been ruled out for the remainder of the NRL season with a serious shoulder injury, with the club reportedly fining Foran $5,000 after feeling he had neglected his obligations.

It has been a turbulent year for both Foran – who joined the club from Manly – and the Eels, who have their 12-point salary-cap penalty due in coming weeks.

His high profile move from Manly has not gone to plan, with the star New Zealand pivot managing just nine games due to injury and his personal issues.

Foran was given a leave of absence by the club in April and reportedly checked in to an overseas rehabilitation clinic.

He has also had to deal with reported legal action against his old club Manly in a stoush over almost $150,000 in third-party payments.

The Eels season has lurched from bad to worse, stripped of their Auckland Nines title before five senior officials were suspended and fine for their systemic salary cap breaches.

Star winger Semi Radradra has also been charged with domestic violence offences amid speculation he is making a move to French rugby.
