Cowboys hold back Knights surge

The North Queensland Cowboys have held off a late surge from the Knights to record a 26-24 win in Newcastle.

Newcastle scored the first try through Chris Houston but it was the visitors who led 16-6 at the break thanks to four-pointers form Scott Bolton, Lachlan Coote and Justin O’Neill.

O’Neill scored again after the interval to extend the Cowboys’ lead only for the Knights to strike back through Akuila Uate.

Just as the Knights looked set to overhaul their opponents, Michael Morgan burst through a series of tackles to score a brilliant solo try and make the scoreline more comfortable for the Cowboys.

The hosts were not done, however, scoring through Joseph Leilua and Sione Mata’utia to move to within two points, but the Cowboys held on to continue their fine record away from home this season.

More to come.
