Canterbury captain Michael Ennis says he will need a miracle to play in Sunday’s NRL grand final against South Sydney.

Hooker Ennis suffered two fractures in his foot in the preliminary-final win over Penrith last weekend.

He turned up on crutches at Belmore on Tuesday.

“To be honest, I need a miracle,” said Ennis, when asked about his chances of facing the Rabbitohs.

“I’ve played injured plenty of times but I just haven’t faced this sort of injury before, where it’s just unfortunate it’s come at this time.

“I know Souths have said that they expect me to play but I’ve been honest all along and said that unless I wake up one day and for some reason the pain is gone, it’s highly unlikely.”

Asked if he could play if given painkillers, Ennis replied: “Not at all, with two breaks in there.”

He said he would do anything he was asked to in the leadup to the game, but would not sit in the coaches box on Sunday.

Ennis thought Damien Cook was the most likely candidate to fill his spot if he didn’t play on Sunday.

Halfback Trent Hodkinson said he was in no doubt for the grand final despite hurting his knee a week ago, even though he might sit out a couple of training sessions.

“I’m feeling good, this time last week it was a lot different, a lot sorer, I could hardly walk,” Hodkinson said.

“But I’m feeling good. I’m getting around nicely.

“I’m working overtime on the knee with physio and it will be good to go.”
