Brutal Rabbitohs steamroll Wests Tigers

A brutal South Sydney, led up front by all four Burgess brothers, have steamrolled to a 32-10 NRL win over Wests Tigers at ANZ Stadium.

Sam and George Burgess starred for the Rabbitohs in eating up the metres alongside brothers Tom and Luke on Friday night as Souths enjoyed a five-tries-to-two victory in front of 20,721 fans.

Winger Alex Johnston and stand-in centre Kyle Turner were the main beneficiaries as both scored try doubles.

Sam Burgess laid on the match-sealing try with a classy offload close to the line for a 54th minute four-pointer to Nathan Merritt that put Souths ahead 24-6 after the Rabbitohs led 12-0 at halftime on the back of their forward dominance.

Johnston scored the opener in the 13th minute when Chris Lawrence made a meal of a John Sutton cross-kick.

With the Tigers on the back foot for much of the half, Turner then crossed on the half hour after a Sutton short ball split the Tigers’ goalline defence from a scrum win.

A Blake Austin try from dummy-half two minutes after the break brought a desperate Tigers back in the contest before some poor marker defence contributed to Johnston racing 60m to restore their 12-point buffer.

James Tedesco chased down his own well-weighted kick through for a 62nd-minute try before Adam Reynolds landed a penalty goal and Turner scored out wide in the dying minutes.

Souths forward Joe Picker left the field due to concussion in the first half and didn’t return and Tigers utility Dene Halatau did likewise in the second half.

Souths duo George Burgess and Kirisome Auva’a suffered second-half ankle injuries.
