Benji free to take on Eels

Benji Marshall will make his much-anticipated return to the NRL on Saturday against Parramatta, with the Wests Tigers and St George Illawarra agreeing on a compensation package for his services.

Marshall quit the Tigers last year to take up a Super Rugby contract with the Blues, but quit the 15-man game after less than six months after failing to make an impact with the Auckland outfit.

As part of his release deal from the Tigers, chief executive Grant Mayer inserted a clause of $200,000 to be paid to the club if Marshall signed for another NRL team before 2015.

Mayer and Dragons counterpart Peter Doust met this week to thrash out a payment agreement and terms were finally agreed on Friday morning.

Marshall will now face the Eels at Parramatta Stadium after coach Steve Price and the Dragons’ medical team were satisfied how he’s come through a full week of training.

“Benji has ticked all the boxes this week and is very keen to get back out on the field and play,” Price said.

“He has trained well and fitted in really well with the group and we know that he will only get better as the weeks go by and he gets more rugby league training and games under his belt.

“But we are looking forward to having him as a part of our team tomorrow.”
