RANDWICK (Kensington) Race 1 — 3yo NMW Handicap (1000m)

A good race to start the day at Randwick on the Kensington track. As you would predict over the 1000m, the tempo is never going to be slow but there are a number of natural leaders engaged here so expecting they may fly along. 1, 3, 4, 5, 7, 9 all have speed. 7 RUN CANNOT RUN has led at his last 4 and expecting him to push forward from barrier 7. He led 1 PIRANDELLO last start and can do so again here. With the likely hot speed on in front, our blackbooker 6 BROOK ROAD maps perfectly here from barrier 4. No doubting he can find a nice position and be suited by the genuine tempo.

1 PIRANDELLO was scratched from a strong race on Saturday at Randwick in preference for this. He was first emergency but would have gained a start so the choice to accept for that and start him here gives us a lead. With two wins and four placing from six career starts, the son of Excellent Art is a super consistent racehorse and he pays for that here with a clear top weight of 60kg. Fortunately apprentice Damien Thornton jumps aboard as the 2kg claim may be important. The flip side of that is that Thornton has not been in great form of late with only two wins from his past 50 rides. Either way, the form from his last run behind Atmospherical stacks up okay and must see him be respected here.

Our blackbooker 6 BROOK ROAD has had the three starts and started his career in fine style with a dominant win at a big quote at Kembla  back in August. He then ran a reasonable third in a strong race before possibly coming to the end of his prep when 3.8-length eighth at Warwick Farm. No surprise to see him immediately spell following that failure and he looks to have come back in very good order considering his trial leading in. His strong debut win is good enough form to consider him a chance in this event and, as stated above, he should get a lovely run from barrier 4. Expecting him to run a good race here and no surprise to see him open at a big quote.

5 HOT HIT has won by some big margins in weaker grade recently. He has drawn perfectly here and drops in weight. No shock to see him measure up.

3 SWEET KISS and 2 I’M NO PHONY have formlines through Bull Point. The latter was beaten a fair way on that occasion but that was admittedly on a slow track and he didn’t seem to handle the track. 2 I’M NO PHONY went well enough on the good track last start to suggest he can run well again here. The horse he beat on that occasion is 8 ROCK TEMPLE. The Waller trained gelding can improve second-up here as many of his horses do and he can definitely turn the tables.

A tricky race to line up but confident our blackbooker 6 BROOK ROAD can run a  good race. Expecting him to be good value and happy to back him each way with more on to place. 1 PIRANDELLO might be the best horse in the race but he is a clear top weight even despite the claim and Thornton isn’t in the best of form.

ASCOT Race 4 — 3yo+ Fillies and Mares Handicap (1400m)

A decent midweek field of fillies and mares meet here with a number of form lines crossing over. 1 MISS MEYET is the horse dropping back in class significantly having run fifth behind Elite Belle in the 1800m black type mares race on New Year’s Day, then running a solid placing behind Magical Mist two weeks ago. From her ideal barrier she will be able to settle in the first four, likely in the pair behind the leaders.

6 ROSALIE PARK and 9 FLIRTACIOUS are the likely leaders here with 9 FLIRTACIOUS having performed well in his two runs since coming across from South Australia. He is up in class today but has run some good races behind the talented Wink And A Nod and Low Flying and his two starts in the state to date. The pace isn’t overly strong so we can see him being in it for a long way.

2 BELLAY has form around all the right horses this time in with Always A Smile and Saxon’s Patch having gone onto run good races in Saturday company, while Because I Said looks like a horse on the way up. The 2kg claim for Joe Azzopardi suits her here as does the drop back to 1400m. She will position up midfield from barrier 7 and looks a strong chance again.

3 CHINA ASTER went horribly last start after being really good throughout the preparation. It looked as though she may have been going for a spell after that however she has turned up her to go around again. Given her form prior to last run, something must have gone terribly wrong and she can return to her best.

There are two very interesting runners in this race being 4 ALL PRIMED UP and 7 MACCHIATO. 4 ALL PRIMED UP is resuming fresh from a late three-year-old staying campaign and hasn’t trialled leading into this so it’s difficult to assess how she is going. The 1400m first up for a stayer looks like a good option, however.

7 MACCHIATO is a horse we have followed through her two trials this time and are keen to see how she performs today. She looks like a stayer in the making at the trials and it’s good to see her over 1400m first up. She seems to have her fair share of talent and with blinkers being put on today she will be flying home late. Our only concern is the race won’t be run at an overly hectic pace and she may be looking for the mile already. Having said that, she does look a great each way chance.

We are happy to have a small each way bet on our blackbooker  7 MACCHIATO who has schooled up for this with two decent trials. 1 MISS MEYET is the horse down in class while 2 BELLAY and 9 FLIRTACIOUS won’t be too far away.
