Saturday horse racing tips: Best bets at Rosehill

Rosehill hosts three Listed races on Saturday as we head into the Summer racing period.

The rail goes into the 6m position,  where it was on Cox Plate day — the day when leading almost gave you a two-length head start. It was a good surface that day and had been getting firmer around that time. But there has been some rain this week, which may remove the prospect of a bad leader’s track.

Race 1 – Benchmark 74 Handicap 1300m (1.17pm AEDST)

Only a small field to kick off the program. Looks to be an even tempo with no natural leaders. Perhaps 1 SUIT could roll forward as he sat forward over 1200m last start and won well. 4 FORGET MAYBE, 5 THE LIFE and 6 MAYSOON won’t be too far away.

3 BLACK REVOLVER was scratched from the last race at Canterbury on Wednesday to be reserved for this. We blackbooked him following a very good trial at this track and he lived up to that effort winning extremely well on debut. He was held up on that occasion but found a split and raced away for a dominant victory. As good a trainer as Chris Waller is, his statistics with runners first-up are not all that fantastic and his horses usually improve with a run under their belts. This is a good sign for 3 BLACK REVOLVER and we’re expecting him to be able to make the step up here. The only concern is barrier one as he may need the breaks to go his way in the straight.

Hard not to like the way 1 SUIT put them away in a similar-graded race to this last start. At the same track he sat on speed and won well. He looks to find the same position but does have to concede weight to these. However the way he attacked the line second up can’t be underestimated and he is sure to run well.

2 BRING A RING was not far off in a Listed race at Flemington over the carnival and she definitely has the talent to run well here. The drop back from 1400m to 1300m is a query but she has had a little freshen up and must be respected.

Confident 3 BLACK REVOLVER can measure up here and make it two from two with even luck in the straight. 1 SUIT and 2 BRING A RING must be respected.

Race 7 – Listed Starlight Stakes 1100m (4.47pm AEDST)

3 ZARATONE only knows one way and that is to lead. He will set a solid tempo. From there you have 4 HEART TESTA who may try to come away from the fence. This should be possible as the field may string out. 5 MASTER HARRY is likely to work across from barrier 8, with 1 HIDDEN WARRIOR and 7 SAFEGUARD just off them.

Following a very good mid-prep trial, 4 HEART TESTA has put in two very good runs and kept his unbeaten record over 1100m in tact last start with a tough win. He is a super-consistent gelding and has to be respected again here. In a race with a fair bit of depth, we just feel he may be a touch under the odds but he is sure to run a good race from barrier 1.

Expecting 7 SAFEGUARD to run very well here. Peter Snowden has kept him in work rather than send him to the paddock. Not only did he contest some good races for his age in the Spring, he did run in an open race on Oaks day. He can cart up behind the speed around midfield and use the lighter weight to his benefit. No doubting he has the talent to win this.

One we have highlighted from a trial back on November 21 is 5 MASTER HARRY. He travelled very nicely in that trial and went to the line under a strong hold. He appears to be in very good order and his form last prep was very good. At around $16 he looks value and a very good each way chance.

Another at a similar quote is 9 FIREBALL. His form back in August around the likes of Velrosso and Catkins reads well for this and with 54kg on his back he must be given a chance at the odds.

1 HIDDEN WARRIOR is the other one to consider. A winner over same course and distance on November 2 against a good quality field. 59kg is a concern however at his last four runs he’s carried 56, 58.5, 57 & 57.

A race with a fair bit of depth and because of this we feel 4 HEART TESTA may be slightly under the odds at around the $3. Leaning to 7 SAFEGUARD on top but no surprise to see our blackbooker 5 MASTER HARRY run a very good race at odds. 9 FIREBALL may also represent value. Could back 7 SAFEGUARD to win and/or 5 MASTER HARRY each way with more on to place. Exotics around those mentioned above may also be a good way to play.
