Queensland Police have confirmed they are investigating allegations of an indecent assault of an athlete from a team visiting the Commonwealth Games.

Mauritius media reported it concerned an official in their nation’s team, and the athlete was allegedly pressured not to report the matter until her return.

The Commonwealth Games Federation said it was aware of the allegations and trusted police to investigate.

Queensland Police Commissioner Ian Stewart said no formal complaint had been laid, but police were currently investigating “allegations of a sexual assault by a member of one of the Commonwealth teams”.

“If there is a person on one of the teams who wishes to make a complaint to Queensland Police Service about some incident that’s occurred, either on the way here or here in this country, then we are ready to take the complain,” he said.

“Our focus is always on the complainant in these issues, and if a person was to come forward making allegations of a sexual assault obviously the Queensland Police would support that person and consider the information that they provided.”
