Best sports stadiums: Is this the future?

Struggling to attract fans to its matches, NFL franchise Jacksonville recognised it needed to offer something different.

So it got to work, investing a reported $US63 million ($85.4 million) in upgrades to the EverBank Field stadium, improving facilities for fans and adding free Wi-Fi.

And to top it off, it added a couple of pools too. Yes, you read that right.

The ‘spas’, as Jacksonville call them, provide a unique vantage point for fans and have encouraged supporters to come and watch a side which has not reached the playoffs since 2007.

“Experience a game like no other place in professional sports!” the Jaguars say on their official website.

“Enjoy this one-of-a-kind chic lounge experience while taking in your Jaguars, complete with spa access, music comfortable lounge furniture, fans and TVs.

“Top it all off with a great all-inclusive food and beverage package that is included in your ticket price and you will never do a game any other way!

“Located in the north end zone on the main level of FanDuelVille, the spas overlook the playing field to give fans a unique and refreshing stadium experience.”

As the Jaguars say, it’s not just pools on offer – DJs play as fans lounge on seats and take in the game.

Fans aren’t allowed to take drinks into the pool, though, with lifeguards on standby to make sure they follow the rules.

Other regulations, according to Sports Illustrated, include no food, no animals, no tubes or rafts.

But that doesn’t stop the fun, particularly when the sun is out, with fan Trent Sebok telling Yahoo Sports: “This is the best thing they could have done.

“Even if the team sucks, you have a good time.”

Businesses have quickly pounced on the novelty of the idea and as a result, you can’t buy individual tickets to the party.

Instead, businesses buy season passes and then distribute tickets, meaning you need to be lucky to score one.

But judging by the demand for tickets – even with Jacksonville still struggling – it may look to add more ‘spas’.

The Jaguars were rewarded for their innovation in 2015 when they won The Stadium Business Award for best premium seat.

The award – dished out at a Barcelona ceremony – saw the Jaguars edge English soccer stadiums Wembley and the Emirates Stadium.

Other unique sports venues

Of course, the Jaguars aren’t the only sporting team to have a unique stadium.

Portugal’s Estadio Axa in Braga is world-famous for the giant cliff at one end.

A rock quarry was carved out to build the stadium, and one end serves as a permanent reminder.

To cross from one side of the stadium to the other, you’ll have to go under the pitch.

Football side HNK Trogir’s home pitch in Croatia is also iconic for the fact it sits between 15th-century buildings – one being Kamerlengo Castle and the other St. Mark’s Tower.

Dubai has the highest tennis court in the world, on top of the 320m-tall Burj Al Arab hotel.

And there’s also the Gjovik Olympic Cavern Hall, the ice hockey rink built for Norway’s 1994 Winter Olympics. It literally is situated inside a mountain.

But none of them have a pool for fans.
