Bronte Campbell claims sprint double in Kazan

Australia’s Bronte Campbell was delighted to win the women’s 50m freestyle final at the world swimming championships on Sunday and complete the sprint double as Australia finished the meet with seven gold medals.

The 21-year-old clocked 24.12 seconds to win gold with previous champion Ranomi Kromowidjojo of the Netherlands taking silver at 0.10sec back as Sweden’s Sarah Sjostrom earned bronze at 0.19.

The win made Campbell only the third swimmer in history to win the women’s 50-100m freestyle double at the world titles.

Eight reasons we’re back in love with swimming

Her older sister Cate missed out on a medal as she finished fourth at 0.24 in a blanket finish.

“That was unbelievable. I couldn’t believe I got the win on that one,” said Campbell, who finishes with three golds and a bronze from the 4x100m medley relay after her 50m triumph.

“Everything at this meet has gone right for me, it doesn’t happen very often and I’m going to try to take advantage of it.

“Three golds and a bronze is more than I could have hoped for coming in.

“There were really four people in this race who could have won and I am very pleased that I managed to get my hand on the wall the quickest.”

McEvoy’s fast finish just fails to catch America in relay

In other events, a fast finishing Cameron McEvoy almost reeled in American Nathan Adrian in an inspired anchor leg but Australia had to settle for 4x100m medley relay silver in Kazan.

McEvoy produced a world class 46.60 freestyle relay split to fall just 0.15sec short of Adrian.

When McEvoy hit the pool Australia were fourth and a second behind the US.

“I went back to my surf lifesaving days and surfed down the first lap and then I could see myself catching Nathan down the final lap,” said McEvoy.

“It’s actually the best I have felt in the warm up all week.”

The team – completed by Larkin, Jake Packard and Jayden Hadler – clocked three minutes, 30.08 seconds to just be pipped by the United States (3:29.93).

Bronte Campbell then backed up to almost repeat McEvoy’s heroics as anchor, however Australia were relegated to 4x100m medley relay bronze behind winners China.

She was one of the team standouts along with backstroke champions Emily Seebohm and Mitch Larkin.

Seebohm also had three gold medals and was the fifth woman since 1973 to complete the 100m-200m world titles doubles.

Larkin finished with two gold after being the first man in 10 years to collect both 100m and 200m gold.

Commonwealth champion Ben Treffers won bronze in the 50m backstroke bronze, with Larkin finishing fourth.

Coach Verhaeren not making Rio predictions

Coach Jacco Verhaeren was not making any Rio predictions despite Australia more than doubling their 2013 world titles haul of three gold.

“I think we should be careful getting ahead of ourselves,” he said.

“We are still learning.

“There were great performances but we still have a lot to do to make it happen on an Olympic stage.

“We are progressing. Next year the clock is going to start at zero again.”
