Rockliff KO’d as Suns smash Lions at Carrara

The Gold Coast Suns have demolished the Brisbane Lions with a 64-point win in the QClash at Carrara.

The Suns led at every change to win 18.10 (118) to 7.12 (54) on Saturday but the result was overshadowed by Brisbane captain Tom Rockliff being subbed out early in the first quarter after being knocked out in a collision with the Gold Coast’s Steven May.

Rockliff was playing only his second game back after missing three weeks with broken ribs and a punctured lung he sustained against Collingwood in round one.

He was running in the Lions forward line in the 17th minute of the game when he took a hip and shoulder from Suns defender May which connected with Rockliff’s head.

He was knocked out and taken off the ground on a medicab soon afterwards and subbed out of the game.

The Lions, already missing several key players, struggled to make an impact without their skipper in the battle of the bottom two on the AFL ladder.

The Suns were on top across most categories, smashing the clearances and contested possessions and out-tackling their opponents.

Charlie Dixon kicked six goals for the Suns, while Dayne Zorko and Dayne Beams kicked two apiece for the Lions.

The win is the first of the 2015 season for the Suns, while the Lions remain winless on the bottom of the ladder after five rounds.
