Aussies dominating classic J-Bay

Australians have filled five of the quarter-final spots at the J-Bay Open surfing event in South Africa.

In powerful 2.5-metre waves at Jeffreys Bay on Saturday, Taj Burrow and Mick Fanning enjoyed round-five victories to advance to the last eight in the sixth event of the World Championship Tour.

They joined fellow Aussies Joel Parkinson, Matt Wilkinson and Owen Wright, who had won through directly.

Wright faces the toughest task against series leader, Brazilian Gabriel Medina, while Wilkinson and Burrow will go head-to-head.

Fanning was particularly impressive in his round-five triumph over Freddy Patacchia Jnr, racking up scores of 7.50 and 8.17 to outclass the Hawaiian.

ASP officials hope the J-Bay Open champion will be decided on Saturday.
