Fitzgibbons wins women’s Fiji Pro

Sally Fitzgibbons has edged out Australian rival Stephanie Gilmore to claim her second straight win on the world surfing tour in Fiji.

Fitzgibbons delivered a flurry of manoeuvres in the closing stages of the event’s final at Cloudbreak on Thursday to narrowly outscore Gilmore 9.00 to 8.73.

The victory follows her triumph over defending champion Carissa Moore at the Rio Women’s Pro earlier this month.

Five-time title winner Gilmore held the lead for most of the battle, only to have it snatched away when Fitzgibbons found an additional wave near the end.

It marked an impressive recovery for the 23-year-old, who survived heavy wipeouts earlier in the day when she defeated Hawaii’s Malia Manuel to secure a spot in the final.

It was very much an all-Australian affair for the round-five event in Fiji, with Gilmore booking her place in the decider with a dominant semi-final win over compatriot Dimity Stoyle.

Stoyle, a tour rookie, was the architect of the week’s biggest upsets – bettering world No.1 Moore in the quarter-finals to advance to the semis for the first time in her career.
