Australia captain Laura Geitz has ended speculation over her netball future, confirming she’ll lead the Queensland Firebirds in next year’s trans-Tasman championship.

The 27-year-old was thought to be contemplating retirement after leading Australia to last month’s World Cup in Sydney.

But the Firebirds issued a statement on Tuesday confirming Geitz would be playing with them in 2016.

“Well it was no secret, but it just wasn’t official that I’d be back in the Queensland team for the 2016 season,” Geitz said.

“I believed the 2015 Firebirds team to be the best that I have played alongside, but with a couple of new additions and our formidable coach in Roselee Jencke, 2016 is going to be one for the history books.”

Geitz has led the Firebirds to two titles from four grand finals in the past five seasons.

The World Cup win over New Zealand in August was her second world title with the Diamonds and she also led the team to the 2014 Commonwealth Games gold in Glasgow.

The 58-55 win over the Silver Ferns would have been a perfect end to Geitz’s career but Jencke says her championship-winning squad is determined on coming back in 2016 to create further history.

“2016 is about challenging ourselves to go where no other ANZ team has gone before – back to back – and play an exceptional and powerful brand of netball which the fans love,” Jencke said.
