Jason Day pips Watson to win Canadian Open

A brilliant birdie putt on the final hole has sealed a one-shot victory for Australia’s Jason Day in the Canadian Open on Monday (AEST).

Day shot a 4-under round of 68, including birdies on the final three holes, to finish on 17-under 271 and win his fourth career title.

American Bubba Watson finished second on 16-under after firing a 3-under 69, while Canadian overnight leader David Hearn shot a level par round of 72 to finish on 15-under 273.

“I got the ball in the hole this time!” Day said after winning the tournament.

“I’m so glad I got the putt in, it just feels so good right now.”

A week ago Day missed a long putt at the British Open that cost him a place in a play-off for the title, eventually won by American Zach Johnson.

This time on the 18th at the Glen Abbey course, Day played out of a bunker to leave himself a seven-metre putt for a birdie, which he drained to win the Canadian title.

Day has struggled with health problems, including vertigo which affected him at the US Open.

“I feel good, really good,” he said after his round.

“I’m taking next week off – the last couple of weeks have been a grind, but it’s all worth it. I’m so proud to be Canadian Open title winner.”

The other Australian to make the cut, Cameron Percy, finished tied for 18th on 10-under, after a final round 70.
