Perth Glory will host the A-league grand final after a stunning victory that went to a penalty shootout which, for a time, it seemed no one wanted to win.

The teams were locked together 3-3 after extra time at Perth Oval with Glory goalkeeper Liam Reddy making four saves, while Adelaide’s Paul Izzo made three.

As the usual spotkickers failed to score, Reddy stepped up to the spot to score one himself.

In the end it was left to Joel Chianese to put Adelaide United’s brave stand to bed 5-4, meaning Glory will host the grand final next week for its first appearance in seven years.

Perth’s Diego Castro scored a double early and it appeared to be an easy night for the home side, before Adelaide’s Papa Diawara scrapped out a goal in the 81st minute.

With just six seconds left in the fourth and final minute of stoppage time, Ryan Kitto fired home the equaliser after Glory failed to clear a corner.

Scott Neville then edged Glory ahead in the first period of extra time before United’s Marco Marrone header levelled the scores with just five minutes remaining.

The penalty shootout was to bring even more drama, with Adelaide first taking the lead then giving it up before five shots in a row were batted back by the goalies.

In the aftermath, Reddy kept his cool, dismissing questions about why he’d taken a penalty himself in the midst of flinging himself in all directions to keep the Adelaide goals out.

“Why can’t goalies take penalties? I’m a confident player … it was good, but I’d rather get it done in 90,” Reddy told Channel Ten.

“We worked on penalties this week at training – cues on players and what they do … and it paid off this week.”

Perth Glory will now face the winner of Sunday’s second semi-final between Sydney FC and Melbourne Victory.
