Socceroos share spoils to stay alive in Russia

Australia has come from behind to keep alive its hopes of advancing at the World Cup after a 1-1 draw against Denmark at Samara on Thursday night.

Tottenham star Christian Eriksen opened the scoring for the Danes with a sweet seventh-minute strike that gave Socceroos goalkeeper Mat Ryan no chance.

But Australia received a massive stroke of good fortune when it was awarded a 38th-minute penalty after a review under the controversial video assistant referee (VAR).

Daniel Arzani shone in another exciting second-half cameo, but No.9 Andrew Nabbout was replaced after injuring his shoulder.

Coach Bert Van Marwijk said he was proud of the team’s performance.

“The disappointment is (after two games) we should have four points,” Van Marwijk said.

“They gave everything, played very well and deserved to win.”

Denmark now has four points, but Australia (one point) will need to beat Peru by a winning margin of at least two goals and then rely upon France to defeat Denmark.
