United eliminate Roar with last-minute magic

A late Awer Mabil goal has handed Adelaide United a dramatic 2-1 win over Brisbane Roar in the first A-League elimination final at the Adelaide Oval.

After a pulsating second half that saw both teams squander chances and both goalkeepers make brilliant saves, Mabil got on the edge of a fine United counter-attack in the 87th minute to poke past Roar goalkeeper Jamie Young.

The Reds had taken the lead early through a fine Craig Goodwin free kick, but saw that lead cancelled out when Thomas Broich pounced on a Dylan McGowan error to equalise in the 27th minute.

The sides traded blows from that point on, with only Mabil’s effort able to separate the sides. Adelaide will now face Sydney FC in next weekend’s semi-final.

More to come.
