Western Sydney Wanderers defender Matthew Spiranovic says a blatant headbutt led to an ugly spitting incident and altercation at fulltime in his team’s Asian Champions League title triumph.

Socceroo Spiranovic, who came on as a substitute, pinpointed Al Hilal forward Nassir Al-Shamrani as the villain and damning video footage of the alleged spitting suggests he could face a lengthy ban.

“I was marking their number 15 (Al-Shamrani) and he made contact with my face twice, the second time was a blatant head butt,” Spiranovic told News Corp.

“The referee and his assistant didn’t see it, that’s what they told me.”

Spiranovic said that when the fulltime whistle went he voiced his displeasure to Al-Shamrani and his rival’s actions prompted the post-match melee.

“He was sitting on the ground and I was walking past and I let him know what I thought about his actions and he just spat at me,” said Spiranovic.

“Their coaches starting coming over and one of their assistants also spat which is disappointing, disgraceful really.”

The Wanderers quickly extricated themselves to begin their celebrations.

“We didn’t want to spoil the occasion,” said Spiranovic.

“Obviously they were very upset, but we didn’t want to take away from the occasion and the performance … so it’s good it was broken up and we continued the celebrations.”
