Ecuador keeps World Cup hopes alive

Ecuador has beaten Honduras 2-1 in Curitiba on Saturday morning to keep the team’s Group E hopes alive.

Enner Valencia scored in both halves to join a number of players on three goals at the top of the Golden Boot standings.

Carlos Costly unleashed a great finish to make it 1-1 after 31 minutes, and the Hondurans thought they had the lead when they put the ball in the net again before half-time, only for Australian referee Ben Williams to rule it out for offside.

Maynor Figueroa nearly grabbed a dramatic equaliser for Honduras with a blast from long-range that went narrowly wide, but Ecuador hung on for the win.

Ecuador (three points) now plays France (six points) in the team’s final match next Thursday (AEST), while Honduras looks to get off the mark against Switzerland (three points).
