World Cup 2014: France punishes Honduras

France has made the perfect start to its 2014 World Cup campaign, dismantling 10-man Honduras 3-0 at Porto Alegre.

In a feisty match full of spiteful challenges and talking points, France took the lead from the spot after Honduras midfielder Wilson Palacios bowled Paul Pogba over in the box just before the break, earning him a second yellow card and an early shower.

French striker Karim Benzema confidently converted from the spot, earning his side a 1-0 lead at half-time.

It was soon added to though, as Benzema’s shot in the 48th minute deflected off the post, then Honduras keeper Noel Valladeres and into the net for an own goal – but not before the goal-line technology was called on to confirm the ball had, just, crossed the line.

Benzema continued his dominance in the second half, slotting from a tight angle in the 72nd minute to complete the rout.
