Costa Rica pull off Cup’s first upset

Costa Rica has pulled off the shock of the World Cup tournament so far with a 3-1 win over Uruguay in Fortaleza on Sunday morning.

Trailing 1-0 to an Edinson Cavani penalty, the Ticos turned the match on its head thanks to a sparkling performance from forward Joel Campbell, who levelled the match with a belting finish on the 54th minute.

The equaliser sparked a double goal salvo for Costa Rica, which scored three minutes later thanks to a brave header on the run by defender Oscar Duarte.

The upset was confirmed on the 84th minute as substitute Marco Urena came on and immediately slotted home the third goal.

Uruguay started without star striker Luis Suarez, who is still recovering from knee surgery.

The two-time world champions’ night got even worse when defender Maxi Pereira was red-carded for a wild swipe on Campbell in injury time.
