Shock cuts in the Aussie World Cup squad

Newcastle Jets striker, Adam Taggart has made the final cut for the Socceroos squad, just days away from Australia’s opening game at the World Cup in Brazil.

Coach Ange Postecoglou has announced his final squad of 23.

The four players to miss out on the final squad were Jets goalkeeper, Mark Birighitti, Josh Kennedy, Tom Rogic and Luke Wilkshire.

Postecoglou says the selection process has been difficult as he had to weigh up form, fitness and squad balance.

“We’ve selected a squad that can do Australia proud and they will walk out onto the pitch for the World Cup in the green and gold shirt and display the characteristics that define our country,” he said.

“Our stated aim is to make our country proud, show the world what Australians are made of and test ourselves against the very best football players in the world and this group of players is capable of doing that.”

Taggart will head to Salvador with the Socceroos to take Croatia in an international friendly on Friday.

Australia take on Brazil in their opening match of the World Cup on June 13.
