Defender ignites Melbourne Victory in 2-0 win

A week after Melbourne Victory were punished for being wasteful in front of goal, it took a defender to show the forwards how it was done.

Left back Adama Traore sent a bullet into Perth Glory’s top corner before substitute Gui Finkler made the game safe, sending Victory fans home happy on Friday night with a 2-0 win.

Victory quickly established the ascendancy and their much-discussed front four piled on the pressure without putting the Glory to the sword.

Nathan Coe was untested the whole first half as Victory piled on attack after attack but, too often, a shot wasn’t registered by their creative men.

Kosta Barbarouses was again among the most wasteful, with many dribbles failing to produce a shot on goal.

Just as the AAMI Park natives began to show their frustration, Traore arrived.

Mitch Nichols picked out Traore on one of his marauding runs, who took one touch before unleashing a thunderbolt with his left boot that had Danny Vukovic well beaten at his near post.

The Victory continued to pile on the pressure after halftime, reaching double-figure shots on target – and that many again squandered – before Perth had their first, from Ryo Nagai in the 72nd minute.

But this was a poor Perth outfit who only threatened briefly on the counter or at set-pieces.

A decent chance from a cut-back was spooned wide by Ryan Edwards in the 79th minute before Coe pulled off the save of the match to deny Jamie Maclaren.

It looked sure to be 2-0 finally in the 88th minute as substitute Gui Finkler found a cross two metres from goal but the well-practiced Vukovic plucked the ball out of the air.

Not to be denied, Finkler went past Glory’s defence in the 89th minute to fire well past Vukovic, Victory claiming the deserved win.
