A member has been expelled and two others slapped with lengthy suspensions after the Marylebone Cricket Club completed its investigation into an ugly confrontation in the Lord’s Pavilion with Australian players.

Australia demanded a “please explain” from the MCC after players were abused and two were allegedly tripped by some members on a dramatic final day of the second Ashes Test on July 2.

In scenes triggered by Alex Carey’s controversial stumping of Jonny Bairstow when he walked out of his crease, things came to a head when Usman Khawaja and David Warner stopped in the long room and approached one man.

Vision from inside the long room as players left the field at lunch showed players were yelled at by several members and labelled “cheats”.

The abuse reportedly included several expletives and calling players a “disgrace”, “liars” and telling them to return home.

The drama is understood to have continued up the stairs and out of camera shot before players ate lunch.

Warner, in particular, was left to force his way through the crowd, which was described as intimidating and akin to a London Tube at 5pm on a Friday.

Khawaja said afterwards he felt compelled to act.

“It was very disappointing. If anyone asked me where the best place is to play, I always say Lord’s; the crowd is great, particularly the members are great,” he told the Nine Network.

“But some of the stuff that was coming out of the members’ mouths was really disappointing and I wasn’t just going to stand by and cop it.

“I just talked to a few of them, a few of them [were] throwing out some pretty big allegations and I just called them up on it and they kept going.”

The situation became so serious that MCC CEO Guy Lavender came down to speak to the members at lunch to remind them to respect players. In the hours afterwards, the MCC since suspended three of its members.

On Thursday (British time), it released the outcome of its disciplinary process.

It said it had charged three members with abusive, offensive or inappropriate behaviour or language. One was expelled, another copped a four-and-a-half-year club suspension and another was suspended for 30 months.

The MCC did not disclose the detail of its findings or identify the trio.

“The actions of the three individuals in the Pavilion on the day in question fell well below the behaviour expected from our members,” a statement read.

“The penalties set out above are the consequences of breaching the club’s code of conduct.”
