Australian coach says he’ll use Smith’s cricket smarts

Australian coach Justin Langer says there’s no awkwardness among the team as the two former leaders Steve Smith and David Warner arrived for their first training sessions with the Australian World Cup squad in Brisbane on Friday.

The former Australian captain and vice-captain, returning to the fold after their ball-tampering suspensions, are part of the 15-man World Cup squad and will will take part in three warm-up games against New Zealand at Brisbane’s Allan Border Field.

Langer remained coy on where the pair will fit into a one-day side on an eight-game winning streak and both are in good spirits after a team meeting on Thursday night broke the ice.

“There’s not tension, honestly we’re so excited to have the boys back, just so excited about playing cricket,” Langer said.

“It’s a bit like facing fast bowling isn’t it, you worry about it until when you get out there and it’s not as bad as you thought it was.”

He said the pair would be “thicker skinned” for their time out of the national set-up.

“We’ll draw on their experience on and off the field and it will be crazy not to. There’s certainly going to be challenges for both of them though,” Langer admitted.

You’ve come from a titled position of captain and then you’re not.

“There’s going to be a certain degree of humility that comes from that. One of our really strong values is humility, so it’ll be a great opportunity for them to develop that.

“But their leadership’s going to be crucial for us to win on the field and win off the field, so we’re looking forward to them developing that.”

Strike bowler Mitchell Starc said ahead of the sessions that there was no lingering disunity or unease about the pair’s return saying “it’s all rosy”.

“It’s onwards, upwards and focused on the World Cup,” Starc said.

We’ve all had our meetings and moved on.”

Starc said he’d been impressed with Warner and Smith’s IPL form where the dashing batsman scored 692 runs in 12 games.

“He (Warner) has been on fire over there, along with Steve, so that’s great for him and great for the group. He’s a world-class player and we’re excited to have him back.”

Starc has had his own worries, having been sidelined with a pectoral injury since the start of February.

Jhye Richardson will be racing against the clock as he battles a dislocated shoulder ahead of Australia’s first World Cup game against Afghanistan on June 1.
