Cricket Australia (CA) has unveiled Kevin Roberts, the man who presided over last year’s bitter pay dispute, as its successor to long-serving CEO James Sutherland.

Chairman David Peever announced the appointment of Roberts at a press conference in Melbourne on Wednesday morning after an “extensive” global search.

After 17 years in the job, Sutherland tendered his resignation in June – two months after Steve Smith and Darren Lehmann vacated their leadership posts following the ball-tampering scandal.

“The game and Cricket Australia have faced some difficult times recently,” Roberts said.

“But we will bounce back, just as our organisation has overcome challenges on and off the field many times in its proud history.”

As Sutherland’s deputy, Roberts led the negotiations for CA during their protracted pay battle with players in 2017.

The incoming boss admitted the situation had been “challenging” but committed to forging a renewed bond with the players and the Australian Cricketers’ Association (ACA).

“We do have a lot to reflect on and learn from – as we have,” he said.

“At the same time, the MOU was signed 14 months ago. And we’re very focused on the future.

“This is about a new chapter for Australian cricket.

“I’m highly committed to deepening our relationships with the players and with the ACA.”

Roberts said he planned to meet with the Australian men’s team and coaching staff on tour in the United Arab Emirates next week.

The 46-year-old joined the Cricket Australia board as an independent director in 2012 after a first-class career with New South Wales.

Peever said Roberts was the identified as the best candidate for the top job due to his ability to lead change and his rich pedigree in cricket, on and off the field.
