Steve Smith and David Warner have been removed from Cricket Australia’s contracted players list as the pair pay the price of the ball tampering saga.

After receiving 12 month suspensions, Smith and Warner were no surprises to be cut loose, while rookie opener Cameron Bancroft was in line to be added to the list before his role in the plot to use sandpaper on the ball against South Africa in the third Test at Cape Town.

Smith and Warner’s deals were estimated to be worth over $2 million each.

“When compiling this list, we reviewed what players have produced over the past 12 months, and importantly where they might fit in the upcoming year,” national selector Trevor Hohns said.

“It’s a tough process, but we’re very satisfied with this group of 20 players.

“We think this a well-balanced list to represent Australia across all three formats.”

Fast bowlers dominate the new additions to CA’s heavily-revamped contracted players list.

Jhye Richardson, Kane Richardson and Andrew Tye, plus all-rounder Marcus Stoinis and wicket-keeper Alex Carey are the first-timers on the 20-man list for 2018-19.

New Test captain Tim Paine and batsman Shaun Marsh have re-joined the list, while spinner Adam Zampa, pacemen Jackson Bird and James Pattinson, all-rounder Hilton Cartwright and wicket-keeper Matthew Wade drop off.

CA 2018-19 contract list: Ashton Agar, Alex Carey, Pat Cummins, Aaron Finch, Peter Handscomb, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Usman Khawaja, Nathan Lyon, Glenn Maxwell, Shaun Marsh, Mitchell Marsh, Tim Paine, Matt Renshaw, Jhye Richardson, Kane Richardson, Billy Stanlake, Mitchell Starc, Marcus Stoinis, Andrew Tye.
