India v Australia Test series: DRS to get the green light

Australian wicketkeeper Matthew Wade has welcomed India’s seeming decision to allow the Decision Review System (DRS) for their upcoming test series, saying it will offer the players much-needed reassurance.

India’s stubborn resistance to DRS, which has never been used in a Border-Gavaskar Trophy contest, is seemingly over.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) trialled the system during England’s recent tour. It also featured in the one-off Test between India and Bangladesh that finished on Monday.

The BCCI is yet to make an announcement, but it is understood DRS will also used in the four-Test series between Australia and India that starts in Pune next Thursday.

“It’s great to have it, it’s reassuring,” Wade said.

“It makes a big difference, not only when you’re bowling but with the bat as well.

“It probably won’t be there when I bat, but it’s nice to have it around.”

The DRS system gives both sides two referrals per 80 overs of a Test, allowing them a chance to overturn on-field decisions with the help of the third umpire and certain pieces of technology.

Wade noted that India, with its heaving crowds, sapping heat and spin-friendly pitches, was a particularly hard place to officiate.

“There’s so much that goes on around the bat, it’s a tough job umpiring in these conditions,” the wicketkeeper said.

“There’s always a lot of bat-pads and a lot of appealing going on.”

Tour game XI

Meanwhile, Matt Renshaw is firming in his bid to open the batting alongside David Warner.

Renshaw has been named at the top of the order in Australia’s three-day tour game against India A, which starts in Mumbai on Friday.

The 20-year-old has also been batting in the nets with Warner at training, with the expectation being he will do the same in the first Test.

There had been speculation, fuelled partly by comments from coach Darren Lehmann last month, that Renshaw could be dropped in favour of subcontinent specialist Shaun Marsh.

The tour XI selected by Trevor Hohns and Lehmann in Mumbai is not the likely side for the first Test; Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood were both rested.

Glenn Maxwell and Mitch Marsh will both play the tour match against India A, giving the all-rounders an ideal chance to build an impressive case for a Test recall.

Australia’s XI to play India A: David Warner, Matt Renshaw, Steve Smith (capt), Shaun Marsh, Peter Handscomb, Mitch Marsh, Matthew Wade, Glenn Maxwell, Steve O’Keefe, Jackson Bird, Nathan Lyon.
