Channel Nine cricket commentator Mark Nicholas was complaining of severe abdominal pain when he was taken to hospital on the first day of the Boxing Day Test between Australia and Pakistan.

Paramedics went to the Nine commentary box at the MCG to help Nicholas, who was not on air at the time he fell ill.

Bystanders saw him being carried from the ground on a stretcher.

He was said to be sweating profusely and struggling when he received medical attention, but is understood to now be in a stable condition.

“During a break today, Mark Nicholas had some abdominal pains,” a Nine spokesperson said.

“He has gone to hospital for appropriate checks.”

Later in the afternoon, his commentary colleague Michael Slater provided an update on his condition.

Play was suspended due to rain on Monday afternoon, with Pakistan four wickets down for 142 runs.
