Pattinson pounds Windies as Test ends in a flurry

Australia’s first Test against the West Indies has ended in a flurry, with 12 wickets falling before tea on day three as the hosts secured victory by an innings and 212 runs.

James Pattinson looked back to his devastating best in the second innings, taking 5 for 27 after Josh Hazlewood had cleaned up the West Indies’ tail in the first innings.

Only Kraigg Brathwaite (94) offered any resistance in the second innings as Pattinson tore through the top order with a devastating spell of fast bowling.

Opener Rajindra Chandrika was caught in the slips by Steve Smith for a duck before Darren Bravo, who completed a well-deserved first-innings century earlier in the morning, was bowled for 4.

Marlon Samuels (3) copped a nasty, rising delivery which he could only parry to David Warner at gully, before Pattinson found himself on a hat-trick after rattling Jermaine Blackwood’s stumps.

Mitch Marsh caught the edge of Denesh Ramdin’s bat, handing Warner another catch, shortly before the lunch break – one that the West Indies were lucky to reach.

Pattinson completed his five wicket haul after the break when Holder got a tickle on one down the leg side into the waiting gloves of Nevill, who would soon add to his tally of catches when Hazlewood caught Kemar Roach’s glove.

When Jerome Taylor was caught at mid off for 12, Brathwaite decided to launch a counter attack that saw boundaries flayed to all corners of the ground, but was ended by a spearing Hazlewood inswinger that took out the off stump.

Australia had secured the victory before tea on the third day after the West Indies’ first innings resistance dissolved earlier in the day.

With Shannon Gabriel out of action due to an ankle injury, Australia needed only three wickets to end the West Indies’ first innings, and wrapped it up in quick time.

Bravo completed his century in the first over the day, a rare highlight for the West Indies in an otherwise disastrous Test.
