Smith sticks with winning squad for second Test

Test captain Steve Smith says Australia will stick with its four-pronged pace attack for the second Test in Perth starting on Friday.

The hosts are set to be unchanged from the side that comprehensively defeated New Zealand at the Gabba earlier this week.

Smith says there is no reason to stray from that winning combination.

“I think the conditions are going to be pretty similar to the Gabba, and it looks a very good wicket out there,” he said.

“So we’re going in with the same team.”

With temperatures in Perth expected to reach mid to high 30s over the weekend, Smith said he was considering shorter rotations for his pace bowlers.

“I think it’s going to be quite warm so that’s definitely a possibility,” he said.

He also said Nathan Lyon would play a crucial role on the WACA pitch.

“It’s nice to have a spinner that bowls really well on bouncy tracks,” he said.

“I think it suits him really well so there’s a good chance he’ll bowl quite a few overs.”

Smith laughed off his growing reputation as Australia’s new Captain Grumpy, but said the side still had to improve, especially in the field after some errors in the first Test.

“We set ourselves some really high standards and we let ourselves down a little bit in that department,” he said.

“I think is one of the best places to field is in the slips because you get a bit of time to see the ball.

“So hopefully we can hold our catches this match.”

Despite the Australians crushing win over the Black Caps in the first Test, Smith said his team was not taking the Kiwis lightly.

“They’re a quality line-up,” he said.

“They’ve played some good cricket over the last couple of years and they’re a good side.

“Hopefully we can start off well the first day and drive the game from there.

“I think we did that really well in Brisbane and I think that’s really important here.”
